The Consulate book club returns on Wednesday 26 November to discuss ‘The Secret Scripture’, Sebastian Barry’s haunting story of love, memory and a past that refuses to stay silent.
Once one of the most beguiling women in Sligo, Roseanne McNulty is now a resident of Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital and nearing her hundredth year. Set against an Ireland besieged by conflict, ‘The Secret Scripture’ is an engrossing tale of one woman’s life, and a poignant story of the cruelties of civil war and corrupted power. The Secret Scripture was selected as the Irish Book Awards Novel of the Year in 2009 and shortlisted for the 2008 Man Booker Prize.
