Executive Office (NI) – Truth Recovery – Public Consultation

The Northern Ireland Executive Office has launched a public consultation on proposals to set up a statutory Public Inquiry for those affected by Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries, Workhouses and their pathways and practices; and a Financial Redress Scheme.

Consultation opened on June 27th, 2024. Closing date September 19th, 2024 at 17:00 (BST).

Background

In November 2021, the Northern Ireland Executive accepted the recommendations of the Truth Recovery Design Panel’s report Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries and Workhouses in Northern Ireland: Truth, Acknowledgement and Accountability.

The Executive Office intends to establish a public inquiry and financial redress schemes which align with Recommendations 3 and 5 of the Report, respectively.

This consultation seeks views on the focus of the public inquiry and the type of redress scheme to be established to inform the required legislation.

The responses received will be collated and a summary published at the end of the consultation period.
