Meet the Irish in BC Committee - HAYLEY

Meet our Committee Members!

The purpose of the Irish in BC is to engage, connect and support Irish individuals, organizations and businesses within the Province of BC and assist them in fostering a more vibrant sense of community and of Irish identity. This will be achieved, primarily, by delivering on a proven digital communications strategy.

Each month, we introduce you to some of the wonderful people behind-the-scenes of our non-profit so you can get to know us more!

Up this lovely month of June is Hayley Murphy, a Kildare native living in Vancouver, BC, since 2017.

We sat down with Hayley and asked her some personal questions so you can get to know her more!

Where are you from?

Born and bred in Kildare, and have called Vancouver home since 2017.

Where’s your favourite place in BC?

Tough to pick just one, but so far, it has to be Pender Island. I spent a few days there last summer, and absolutely loved it. Such a beautiful island to explore.

Why do you volunteer with Irish in BC?

I spent the first few years of my time in Canada not really involved in the Irish community at all; I wanted to immerse myself in all the amazing aspects of Canada and Canadian culture. Then, during the pandemic, I found myself missing home more than ever and when I saw the Irish in BC looking for volunteers, I jumped at the chance to get involved. It’s been almost a year now, and I’ve loved supporting the community, and community groups wherever I’m needed.

What was your favourite event?

I’d have to say the @sunrisesocialvancouver’s “paint nite” we had in May. We had a super fun event in the Wolf & Hound, with 24 lovely people, led by our painting pro, Galina.

Any hobbies or interests?

Hiking, reading, painting and catching a beautiful sunrise or sunset!

Favourite Irish food, drink or snack?

Bacon and cabbage, or McDonnells curry, specifically my mam’s.

What do you miss most from Ireland?

Family & friends. And the local chipper, Rosie’s!

If you could choose one age to be forever, what age would it be and why?

29’s been good so far, so let’s stay here!

What are three items you’d take with you to a deserted island?

Tom Hanks (he’s already gotten off a deserted island once!), sunscreen (because I’m a redhead, and have pale Irish skin) and my trusty volleyball, Wilson.
